I run production for a small laser engraving shop. Over the last five years, I've coordinated 200+ rush orders—actual deadlines, not "it would be nice if" deadlines. - Line art for cutting should be vector, not a scanned image. A PNG of a cut line rasterizes into a rough, charred edge.
- Raster engraving images should be high-contrast and at least 300 DPI at final size. Commercial print and clean engraving both live at that standard, and going below it gives you a washed-out, pixelated result.
- Know what your software treats as "engrave" vs. "cut." In LightBurn, black raster engraves, black vector lines cut. If I open a file and the text is red, I don't assume—I check the layer settings first.
For tumblers, I always build a flat wrap file at the tumbler's exact circumference and put a reference line where the handle seam sits. If the foam starts to melt into a sticky mess, slow down? No—speed up or drop power. Melting usually means too much heat in one spot. If the wood cut comes out charred but incomplete, the material may be denser than expected. That's exactly why the next step exists.
Step 5: Run a 3-Minute Test. Every Time. Even on a Rush.
I know it feels like you don't have three minutes to spare. But you don't have the 45 minutes it takes to discover a bad batch after running the full sheet.
Our standard test is simple: a 20×20mm square for engraving, and a small channel for cutting. One or two passes. Thirty seconds to set up, two minutes to run, and it tells you more than any settings table can.
This saved us last December. Our usual foam supplier was backordered, so we grabbed a sheet from a local vendor who swore it was the same thing. The numbers from our last job said 350 mm/min should cut it cleanly. My gut said it felt denser when I lifted it. The test channel came out half-cut and sticky at the edges. I use USPS for a lot of small parcel shipping.
